Frequently Asked Questions About Eyelash Extensions
What are Eyelash Extensions?
Like hair extensions, eyelash extensions are a cosmetic process whereby synthetic materials are applied to create a fuller, longer look. Aiming for an authentic, natural feel, they come in various lengths, colors and thicknesses, and can be worn during sleep, showering and swimming. Eyelash extensions differ from “fake” or “false” eyelashes in that they are applied one by one by a certified professional, and can last for up to eight weeks.
How do I prepare for my Eyelash Extension appointment?
-Remove all makeup, including foundation, eyeliner, eyeshadow, mascara, and eye creams.
-Shower before your arrival.
-Do not wear contact lenses to your appointment. Wear glasses instead.
-Do not curl your eyelashes the day of your lash appointment.
-Do not apply heavy creams, lotions or oils to your face within 24-48 hours prior to you eyelash application.
-Do not receive chemical treatments to your eyelashes, such as tinting or perming, within 48 hours prior to your appointment.
-Ensure you have fully recovered from recent irritating eye-area treatments, such as skin resurfacing procedures, chemical peels, waxing, and permanent makeup application.
How are Eyelash Extensions applied?
The procedure can take an average of 2 hours for an initial full set of extensions or 1 hour for a fill. The procedure is done lying down in a private, quiet room designed for comfort. My clients often take this time to meditate or get some rest as it can be quite a relaxing process. You are welcome to bring an iPod and wear comfortable clothes.
How long will a set of Eyelash Extensions last?
Since eyelash extensions shed just like natural lashes, clients are advised to have them refilled every 2-4 weeks depending on your hair growth cycle. The average cycle of a single natural eyelash is 60 to 90 days. The extensions can last for six to eight weeks with proper care and remain on your natural lashes until they naturally fall out, as all lashes do.Everyone’s experience will differ based on day to day activities and aftercare. Factors such heavy makeup, non-approved mascaras and skin care products (those not made for eyelash extensions), and excessive touching and rubbing of the lashes will shorten the lifespan of your lashes.
Can I apply mascara to Eyelash Extensions?
Mascara does not have to be worn with eyelash extensions because they give the illusion that you are already wearing it! If you decide to wear mascara ONLY USE water-based mascara. DO NOT USE any oil or water proof mascara. Mascara that is oil based or containing glycols can dissolve the bonding agent and shorten the lifespan of your extensions.
Can I swim, shower, exercise, or visit a spa while wearing Eyelash Extensions?
Yes! Yes! Yes! We recommend that the first 12-48 hrs you reserve extreme caution with your eyelash extensions and do not apply water on or near the lashes.
What are the most common types of Eyelash Extensions?
There are three types of lash extensions : synthetic, silk and mink. Size availability ranges from 6mm to 17mm in length and .07mm-.25mm in width. Once selected, the lashes are applied one at a time using a specially formulated, semi-permanent glue that will not irritate the eye nor damage the natural lash. However, since allergic reactions are possible, there are different types of glue based on one’s sensitivity.
Will your natural lashes get harmed or damaged?
The biggest myth is that lash extensions ruin your own lashes. They do not. If applied correctly and properly, they are safe and do not ruin the health of your natural lashes. Be sure not to rub your eyes or tug or pull on the extensions because this can cause lash loss and even damage to your natural lashes. If lashes are applied properly and to each individual lash, they won’t fall out.
